Music theory can sometimes have you following specific rules or patterns to create interesting melodies. But rules were made to be broken. Leaving your sequences to chance can have its advantages, particularly with Ableton Live’s Random device. Getting creative with Random can result in some intriguing melodic and percussive parts that you may not think of creating on your own.

In this Ableton Live tutorial, Liam O’Mullane shows you how to get creative with Live’s Random MIDI device. You’ll learn how to use each of the parameters on the effect, and how to change the direction of the randomised sequence. Liam shows you how random notes can be captured and edited to quickly create new parts for a track, making room for lots of “happy accidents” in your productions.
