Spotify Greenroom is now Spotify Live, with live audio features to be added to the main app

Finally, a name that sounds less like a gardening app.

Spotify Greenroom is getting a new name and a new home. Spotify announced today that in addition to rebranding its Greenroom app as Spotify Live, it will be integrating live audio features from the companion app into the main Spotify app most are familiar with.

Listeners can now tune in to Spotify Live using the standalone app or via the newly-added livestream function in the Spotify app itself. To start, Spotify’s main app will only include live audio content from select original programming, which highlights the platform’s top audio creators. Independent creators who wish to go live can still do so via the Spotify Live app.

Although users will be able to tune in to live programming on Spotify via the creator’s podcast or artist page, they must switch to the standalone Spotify Live app if they wish to participate in the chat or join the host ‘onstage’.

Last month, Bloomberg reported that a rebranding is on the horizon for Greenroom, which Spotify launched in 2021 in an attempt to recreate the wildly popular social audio app Clubhouse. Reception towards Greenroom, however, has been largely lukewarm with a slew of similar live audio offerings like Twitter Spaces and Facebook’s Live Audio Rooms competing for attention last year.

As part of the rollout, Spotify will be hosting a series of live audio events, starting with a live edition of Off the Record with DJ Akademiks today.

Other upcoming live events through the platform are as follows:

DJ Akademiks’s Livestream with Guest Waka Flocka Flame (12 April, 12 PM EST)

Tana’s Toxic Tips with Tana Mongeau (13 April, 9 PM EST)

After Hours with Alex Cooper (13 April, 10 PM EST)

Swedish House Mafia Paradise Again Album Release Party With Spotify Live From the Desert (15 April)

King of the Court with Hasan Minhaj (May, more details to come)

The shows will be available in select markets, said Spotify.
