Sample pack platform Cymatics has unleashed Diablo Lite, a freeware transient shaping plug-in that uses Punch and Clip parameters to help your drums sound beastly.

Some common techniques in modern-day drum production include parallel compression and saturation. These methods can give drums more presence in a mix and are especially prevalent in hip-hop and trap for making 808 beats hit harder.

Diablo Lite is split into two engines: Punch and Clip. Punch is the transient shaping part of the plug-in which seems to act in a similar manner to a parallel compressor. This will accentuate transients as you crank up the dial, making kicks and snares really slap.

Clip is a modern hard/soft clipper which will saturate your sounds for added warmth and harmonic character. Cymatics says it has “spent tons of hours perfecting the sound of DIABLO’S clipper, giving you the perfect tool to achieve modern industry sound on your drums”.

We’ve seen a similar concept from Baby Audio in its Parallel Aggressor plug-in. Diablo Lite seems to take inspiration from Parallel Aggressor, sporting a similar GUI layout, although omitting some of the more advanced features and algorithms. Cymatics is planning a full version of Diablo, however, which will offer more control over the effect. This will include Boost, Body and Heat parameters, filter and EQ section, presets and more.

It’s hard to say no to a free plug-in, especially an easy-to-use plug-in that promises to enhance your beats. We’re interested to see the full version of Diablo and how it compares to the likes of Parallel Aggressor and W.A Production Puncher – and if it will be worth the price tag.
