This Producertech release is a follow-up to Rob Jones’ beginner theory course, and presents musical ideas in a more modern and electronic-based setting. Its 16 videos run a combined total of two-and-a-half hours, and link to additional Ableton Projects, MIDI patterns, samples, diagrams, and a short course assessment. Topics cover basic triad progressions in major and minor scales, the circle of fifths, extended chords, modes and more.
For the most part, there’s a piano keyboard on screen so that you can clearly see the notes, with later chapters showing piano rolls in Logic and Live. The content is clearly presented and has a good sense of progression, as the later chapters take what’s been covered and expand upon it with real-world drum ’n’ bass, trap and hip-hop examples.
