Sequential founder Dave Smith has lifted the lid on some of the brand’s future plans, revealing that he hopes to launch two new products in 2021.
In late April, the US-based synth-maker announced that it had been acquired by Focusrite Group, which also owns Adam Audio and Novation. Smith and Focusrite CEO Tim Carroll sat down for a conversation with Sweetwater last Thursday (6 May) to share what the move entails.
“We’ve got an awesome new product coming out July, August or so,” Smith shared. “We’re still going to be building them in the same place in San Francisco.”
He continued: “We’re hoping to have two [products out] this year […] and I think everybody’s going to like it. It sounds good, it’s cool.”
Carroll said that when Focusrite looked over Sequential’s roadmap prior to the acquisition, there was “clearly no shortage of new products that were in development and new ideas”.
“We want them to carry on and do what they do, which is make world-class synthesizers,” he said.

Sequential was founded in San Francisco in 1974 and is regarded as a pioneer in analogue synthesizers. It’s best-known product, the Prophet-5, launched in 1978 and was the world’s first fully programmable polyphonic synth.
Last October, the company reintroduced the Prophet-5 and -10 to market, and just a few months later, released desktop versions of both synths.
