UVI has launched 8-Bit Synth, a sample-based virtual instrument that lets you inject the magic of 80s video game consoles into your music.

Going retro is a popular modern concept – be it with music, indie games or TV shows – so it’s really no surprise that authentic 8-bit sounds are sought-after. But, chiptune music trackers can be tricky to learn, and getting your synths to sound like the real thing isn’t quite as easy as it may seem.

This is where 8-Bit Synth presents a solution. While it’s not a full-fledged synth, its 30,000 samples and 375 presets are evocative of the countless nights you spent playing gameboy in the backseat of your parent’s car to dim orange street lights (well, assuming you were born in the 80s).

To create the pack, UVI sampled from a collection of vintage computers and gaming systems from the Commodore 64 and Nintendo Game Boy to the SID Station, Mod Machine and more.

The instrument has a two-layer architecture, meaning you can combine two samples at a time to create your own hybrid tones.

But it isn’t quite game over there, there’re also multimode filters, amp and filter envelopes, pitch and stereo controls and modulation options galore. Plus, you also get UVI’s Thorus phase modulator and SparkVerb algorithmic reverb, on top of a three-band EQ, drive, ensemble, phaser and delay effects.

All these features are wrapped up in a gloriously retro UI, which you can see in the demo below:

UVI 8-bit Synth is available now with an intro price of €59 (usually 99€). It’s also included in UVI’s Toy Suite. It runs as a library in Falcon 2 Synthesizer or in the free UVI Workstation.
