Summer NAMM 2019 Video: Black Lion Audio’s B172A rack unit combines an 1176 and a LA-2A
One device, two compression flavours.
Black Lion Audio (BLA) has pulled the curtains back on B172A, a rack unit that combines two compression staples – the 1176 and LA-2A – that have been studio favourites for decades.
B172A’s 1176-style compression takes its cues from BLA’s popular Seventeen F.E.T compressor. The LA-2A, which is responsible for optical compression, gets its flavour from a custom T4B “opto” element named T4BLA.
According to the brand, B172A was designed with the goal of flexibility. This is evident from the device’s AB-BA switch that affords you quick routing of the internal signal. You’ll also have the option of using each compressor independently.
To ensure a premium compression experience, BLA has kitted B172A out with top-of-the-line components. These include a Cinemag input transformer – used on the LA-2A side – as well as the brand’s own Chicago-wound output transformers used on both circuits. Topping off the boutique offering is a high-grade signal path as well as decoupling capacitors.
