Moog has given its Matriarch and Grandmother semi-modular systems an all-black makeover. Introducing the Dark Series, which aims to evoke the design sensibilities of early-period Moog modular systems.

When the Moog Matriarch and Grandmother first launched, die-hard fans of the legendary synth brand were quick to note the breach of some long-standing colour conventions. Purple, green and yellow – which were used to separate different modules – were a stark contrast to Moog’s usual colour palette of black or ‘dark black’ on wood. Some fans were appalled (we were fond of it) – and that’s now brought us the Dark Series.

Regardless of whether you’re a black-on-wood purist or a colour-loving neophyte, you’ll be pleased to know that Moog has also launched firmware updates to both the Matriarch and Grandmother. Overall, improvements have been made to the internal arpeggiator/sequencer, analogue clock, and MIDI sync. Grandmother users get a new envelope multi-trigger mode on their system, too.

Moog has also created 16 free new patches for the Grandmother, and 14 for the Matriarch. These were “designed to guide your eternal experimentation and open your mind to each instrument’s unparalleled analogue sound,” says Moog.

To round off the Dark Series are some newly designed protective cases, which you’ll have to purchase separately, but come in a neat black-red colour combination.

The dark series Grandmother and Matriarch are available now, priced at £918 and £2,111, respectively.
