Manchester-based music charity Brighter Sound, to tie off its Let’s Reconnect, is hosting a four-day event that celebrates new music. As part of the event, it has partnered with free online music-making platform BandLab to host a one-off workshop for women and people from marginalised genders to come together, develop skills on BandLab and meet new collaborators.

The session will be hosted today (26 April) from 1-3 PM UK time, and consist of a Q&A session with Bandlab’s Aqilah Misuary as well as a “speed meeting session” that will let attendees meet other producers and musicians.

The event also offers the opportunity to pitch for a “48-hour flash commission” with someone at the event. After the workshop, five pairs of new collaborators will be given the opportunity to create a track using BandLab. After submitting a proposal by the end of the day, you’ll find out tomorrow (27 April) if you’ve been selected. You’ll then have two days to write and produce your track. Each artist will receive a fee of £200.

Debra King, director of Brighter Sound, said of the event: “As the challenges of the last twelve months leave many musicians feeling like they no longer have a viable career, our work as a music charity has never felt more crucial.

“Throughout the pandemic we’ve been supporting people to reconnect with their creative practice, their professional development, and each other. We can’t wait to shine a light on the incredible new work that has been created, and come together to share reflections, new perspectives and our hopes for a more equitable future for the music industry.”
