NATIVE Instruments Action Strings 2

Native Instruments has released Action Strings 2, the second iteration of its Kontakt instrument primed for cinematic scores. The virtual instrument comes in collaboration with Sonuscore and features performances from the Hungarian Studio Orchestra.

Building on its predecessor, Action Strings 2 comprises over 30GB of what Native Instruments calls Live Modules. While Action Strings 1 was made with fixed two-bar phrases, Action Strings 2’s Live Modules are a series of mini-phrases with adjustable pitch, dynamics and rhythm.

The Live Modules act as building blocks, with the ability to chop up, duplicate and tweak elements for unique phrases.

According to the Berlin-based developer, the virtual instrument boasts a realistic sound that isn’t achievable with a single note library – all thanks to these Live Modules. You can also play note sequences in real-time with a MIDI controller and DAW piano roll, with a range of articulations available.

A MIDI drag-and-drop function lets you copy your phrases into your DAW’s MIDI region for swift editing of a part. Alternatively, use this mode to apply the MIDI data to another virtual instrument in your session.

Melody mode allows you to pitch individual notes and Live Modules, while an Arpeggiator Mode can break up chords into elegant passages.

Action Strings 2 was recorded in TOM TOM Studio D in Hungary, where the likes of Peter Gabrel, Patrick Doyle, BBC and Electronic Arts have produced orchestral works. Five mic positions were used to capture the performances, which you can switch and blend. Onboard effects include reverb and EQ for dialling in the perfect space.

Action Strings 2 is available now for £269/$299/€299. Owners of Action Strings 1 can upgrade for a price of £179/$199/€199.
