Welcome back to Point Blank’s weekly spot here on Music Tech, where this week we offer up an amazing deconstruction of Roy Davis Jr’s classic garage track, Gabriel.
Gabriel by Roy Davis Jr. (featuring Peven Everett) is an absolute all-time garage classic, in fact it was voted for unanimously in the Point Blank offices when our team were asked which track should be put up for deconstruction next. In case you’ve never heard it, Gabriel features a very soulful, groovy bassline that, like many of the world’s greatest pieces of music, is actually pretty simple. Couple that with timeless vocals and that slightly off, razor sharp trumpet sample and you’ve got one of the most popular garage tracks of all time and a track that is simply loved by all.
In this video we see Ski take apart the various elements of the track in his usual easy-to-follow yet effortless manner. He begins with working out the key of the organ and the chords that are present throughout – he soon discovers that some of the notes are in the Dorian scale.
