Point Blank Tutorial: Advanced drum mixing with Danny Linton
Funk Ethics shows you how to transform drum grooves into exciting patterns
In this tutorial video, Point Blank lecturer, Danny Linton aka Funk Ethics, explores some techniques to make basic drum patterns sound professional, interesting and impacting. Danny uses a combination of EQ, compression and creative modulation processing. While each element is subtle on its own, together they bring complexity and new dynamics to the entire drum track. By being creative with effects, Danny explores using a simple drum loop to create new melodic and rhythmic ideas, making a foundation for an entire track.
Danny produces under the Alias Funk Ethics and has contributed to the UK bass scene releasing music on Pitch Black, Boka and Brownswood Recordings. His work has been recognised and supported by high calibre artists such as Skream, Mary Anne Hobbs, Giles Peterson, Scuba, Goldie and Pendulum. Danny teaches Point Blank’s foundation year, in courses such as Production Portfolio, Intro to Production, the Final Major Project and more. If you’re interested in learning more from Danny first hand, you can check out Point Blank’s line of London Courses.
While this tutorial focuses on a UK garage-style beat, the techniques are intended to be applicable to a wide range of genres. If you’re looking for some new one-shot drum sample to experiment with drum mixing techniques, Point Blank have a range of sample packs available. You can download five sample packs for free here.
