ADE 2023: “I believe that any misstep is always a lesson”: Afrojack on why budding producers should embrace their mistakes
The producer spoke on a panel at this year’s Amsterdam Dance Event.

Producer Afrojack has given his advice for how budding producers should view and utilise their mistakes.
The artist spoke during a panel at the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) last week (19 October), where he shared his advice on taking responsibility and how he uses his missteps to teach other upcoming artists.
During the Evolution of Afrojack panel, the Grammy-winning producer and founder of WALL Recordings reflected on some of his mistakes, which he now views as lessons.
“Well, I am where I am today also because of the missteps,” he begins. “So I believe that any misstep is always a lesson. So it’s always good.
“Like, for example, I didn’t put my name on [David Guetta’s] Titanium or I got muscled out of the [Chris Brown] Look At Me Now production credits or Beyonce’s Run The World because of my lack of experience, but having that experience taught me how to deal with these types of things, and also taught me what type of person I want to be, because I know the different ways there are to go about business, you know?”

He continues, “You can tell someone, ‘this is what I want to do’, then you can be sweet, or you can be sour. And you can also not tell someone what you’re gonna do. It’s like, it’s all possibilities and to each their own.
“But to me, even though I could see those types of things as mistakes, or I should have been more exact, they were very, very wise lessons for me, which I’ve also been able to teach other people. So I think mistakes are the most valuable lessons.”
