Get the most out Fresh Air, Slate Digital’s free exciter plug-in
Slate Digital’s new exciter based on the Dolby-A trick is a quick way to add excitement to tracks and mixes
Slate Digital Fresh Air Hero
Slate Digital has revealed a brand new free exciter plug-in based on the Dolby-A trick called Fresh Air. Watch for an overview of its uses.
Fresh Air has a sleek and modern interface that lets you add in two bands of high-passed, compressed signal back into your audio path. This isn’t an exciter that’s going to generate harmonics, but instead, gently bring high-mid and high-frequency content to the forefront.
While it’s possible to achieve a similar effect with multi-band compression or dynamic EQ, Fresh Air makes boosting presence and sparkle fast and intuitive. You also don’t need to worry about your tracks becoming brittle because the process isn’t just adding a high shelving EQ.
The interface is very simple with two main processing bands: Mid Air and High Air. These are two overlapping high-passed, gently compressed that can be mixed into your signal for a subtle lift in high frequencies. There’s also a ‘Link’ button that fixes the relationship between high-mid and high bands. For checking your results, there’s a snapshot mode so you can audition two different settings. A trim control rounds out the controls to ensure you don’t fall into the louder-is-better trap.
