Jacquire King’s recording of Cass McCombs’ The Wine of Lebanon.
Universal Audio has just added a huge new feature to their Luna recording system. Version 1 impressed us with its potential, but by giving users free access to multitrack sessions recorded by leading pros, it’s carving a niche in education, too.
The idea of sharing professional sessions to help producers learn their craft is not new – Apple has recently included Billie Eilish’s Ocean Eyes with Logic Pro 10.5 for free. However, Luna Sessions seems to be a more regular affair.
The first freely downloadable session is The Wine of Lebanon by folk/alt-country artist Cass McCombs. Hear the mix here:
The track was recorded by Grammy-winning engineer Jacquire King, (Kings of Leon, Tom Waits) at the legendary United Recording in LA, designed by Bill Putnam Sr.
Now, you can pick apart the session file as it was recorded, seeing how a top-flight engineer mixes with Unison and UAD-2 processing plug-ins.
There are two versions available – one with full processing and one optimised for hardware running a UAD-2 Quad DSP chip. If you’re a newcomer to the UAD-2 ecosystem, don’t expect all processing to be available to you. There are over $3000-worth of plug-ins loaded on just the smaller session. Of course, you can try these plug-ins if you’ve not yet used your 14-day trial versions.
If you have and you can’t quite bring yourself to part with three grand, it’s still an interesting way to dissect professional arrangements, see what plug-ins are being used, examine bussing and to solo some beautifully recorded tracks.
