Spitfire Audio’s free experimental LABS synth lets you play with unique textures
Opia is built with audio samples from Ólafur Arnalds and artists from his festival.
Spitfire Audio is back again with another LABS instrument, this time going for a more experimental approach with Opia. The software instrument was created from a collection of sonic textures taken from Ólafur Arnalds and artists performing at his London festival, Opia – hence the instrument’s name.
These artists include Kiasmos, VAAL, Rhye, Poppy Ackroyd, Högni & Ensemble, Grandbrothers, Hania Rani and Josin. For the project, each of the artists contributed a sample that means something to them. The sounds range from ice skating recordings to piano pieces, and have been twisted and manipulated by the team at Spitfire Audio to turn them into something new and obscure.
LABS is a free plug-in that hosts sample instruments created by Spitfire Audio. The interaction with the software is always simple, with only a few parameters to adjust, but this is not to understate some of the interesting sounds that it’s capable of creating.
