Building on its collection of AI-based effects plug-ins, sonible has released smart:reverb. As you’d expect, this reverb uses AI to create a custom reverb space for the instrument you apply it to.

smart:reverb achieves such results by analysing your audio and making decisions based on the spectral and temporal characteristics of the material. This also allows for the reduction of common problems like muddy reverb tails or unwanted resonances in the space. To make user-defined alterations to the reverb, an XY pad is onboard to swiftly fluctuate between smart:reverb’s different properties: Natural, Rich, Artificial and Intimate.

The intelligent plug-in is a hybrid reverb, blending fully parametric reverb with the sonic qualities found in convolution reverbs. Despite it being AI-based, you can still take control of the processing, with a GUI that provides an interactive view of the inner-workings of the plug-in. Labelled as the ‘smart:engine’, you’re able to make changes to the reverb’s time and pre-delay and to the spread, clarity and density evolvement over time. Smart:reverb also boasts layering features for creative sound design.

Sonible’s co-founder Ralf Baumgartner says of smart:reverb: “It’s very easy to get lost when searching for the right reverb. You might know what you want but getting there can be time-consuming and tedious. When we developed smart:reverb, we started with a clean slate to support users in realizing their unique vision. So, we moved away from the idea of rooms, presets, etc. and instead focused on finding the right sound for the material they are actually working with.”

smart:reverb is compatible with macOS and Windows and is available in AU, VST2, VST3 and AAX formats. The plug-in is available at an introductory price of €89, moving up to its MSRP of €129 on 10 September 2020.
