Virtual instrument makers Sampleson has launched a brand-new, free instrument called Sub. Described as raw analogue drums and a sub-bass oscillator, by its makers, Sub is clearly based on Roland’s TR-808.

Because it uses synthesis rather than sampling, it affords you a decent amount of control over your sound while only weighing in at around 35MB.

Sub sports 18 analogue-style drum sounds, a mixer with volume and pan for each sound, plus controls for BD sub pitch, BD and sub pitch and snap controls for the snare. By no means are all parameters accessible, but for a free drum machine, we can overlook that.

There’s no TR-style sequencer here, either, just the sound sources. And considering it’s designed to pair with your DAW, you probably won’t miss it.

Sub works on 32 and 64-bit Windows, Mac and comes in VST, AU and standalone versions. All you have to do to unlock the download is to share the news on one of your social media accounts.
