Make your music less robotic with Naturaliser
Music often sounds better when there’s variation. Rast Sound’s plug-in applies that concept effortlessly
Naturaliser from Rast Sound is a plug-in that is designed to make productions sound more like a performance. The effect applies subtle variations over time to prevent ear fatigue when listening back to a track, altering spectral, transient and colouring dimensions. It can also be used for extreme variations.
This plug-in could be especially useful in the world of electronic music, where synths and drum machines work to fixed timings and beats. In a world of quantisation, it’s become apparent that staying in time isn’t always as desirable as one might think. Check it out in action below.
Naturaliser’s three dimensions – spectral, transient and colouring – are the foundations of which audio files are manipulated. The plug-in slices time into user-defined sub durations, applying random states of these dimensions from one sub duration to another, according to the developer. The speed parameter will let you dictate the rate, intensity and dimensions your audio is affected by.
Extreme Mode will push things beyond natural, applying unexpected, dramatic variations. This is best used as a creative sound design tool. Noise is another quirky feature that will add noise motion sequences to add colour to your audio and create noisy patches.
Rast Sound only seems to mention audio files in the description of Naturaliser, so it’s unclear whether you can use it on MIDI files. Although randomisation and variations can be made manually with MIDI, it would be a handy tool to have if you’re feeling particularly lazy.
Naturaliser is available in AU and VST3 formats for macOS and Windows. It’s currently on offer until 21 January at a price of €29, moving up to €39 thereafter.
