Stranger Things and Survive co-founder Michael Stein has teamed up with influential Dallas-based artist Protovolt to create The Protovault. The duo has also launched its Synth Lord platform, hosting a community space for synth enthusiasts.

The Protovault

The Protovault is home to a growing and rotating collection of multi-sample instruments and production tools for Ableton Live and Logic Pro. These unique tools are designed to inspire producers and musicians, offering a simple plug-and-play approach for a smoother creative workflow. Each instrument has been custom designed and recorded using Stein and Protovolt’s jaw-dropping collection of vintage gear.

Stein and Protovolt’s service will release instruments sets in three different series. The Limited Series rotates on a monthly basis, with each instrument only available for 30 days. These packs will focus on themes rather than genres and kicks off with Action Rewind Vol 1, an instrument pack centred around sounds of classic 80s action films. Considering that a Stranger Things soundtracker is involved in the creation of this instrument, you’re guaranteed to get some sweet, nostalgic sounds out of this one. It boasts 25 multi-sampled instruments ready to play with a channel strip setup, a drum kit and an 80s action effects kit.

The Artist Series will see The Protovault collaborate with artists to create instrument sets based on their signature sounds, with “some great artists lined up” already, the brand tells us. Finally, The Legendary Series focuses on paying tribute to iconic artists and producers whose style and sounds are instantly recognisable. With this series, you’ll be able to harness these sounds in your own projects.

Synth Lords

Along with the launch of The Protovault, Stein and Protovolt have set up Synth Lords: a community forum that lets synth enthusiasts access competitions, giveaways and exclusive events. There are also plans to offer a range of limited posters, vinyl releases, collectables and more.

Although these endeavours immediately hone in on releasing production tools and merchandise, Stein and Protovolt aim to achieve a much greater vision. “Our instruments are designed to inspire the creative process but are only one element in our expanding universe. We are building an inclusive community for fans, by fans of synthesizers and pop culture, to share and rejoice in the things that bring us together”, they say.
We have seen many platforms and services launch in the endeavour of producing high-quality production tools, but The Protovault seems like it could be a unique contender in the market. Especially considering the eclectic range of instruments at the company’s disposal. We’re also keen to see how Synth Lords may play a role in the synth community.
