NAMM 2020: Moog’s Subsequent 25 has arrived
Moog’s latest offering has the same sound engine as the Subsequent 37 in a smaller package for $849.

NAMM 2020: When you look at the Subsequent 25, Moog’s latest synth, you could be forgiven for thinking it looks rather familiar. That’s because it’s essentially a Subsequent 37 – the company’s duophonic analogue synth – in the same footprint as a Sub Phatty.
The 25-key synth was due a refresh, and the Subsequent nomenclature denotes a host of upgrades that were introduced on its larger sibling. These are namely double the headroom to allow a greater range of clean tones, especially when in duophonic mode. As well as clean tones being more easily achievable, it’s also possible to get even dirtier than before with a re-tuned Multidrive circuit and a reshaped gain staging in the Ladder Filter to allow greater harmonic saturation and analogue compression, for a “richer low end,” says Moog.
The playing experience has been improved with a new keybed, and for those who need a louder headphone output have also been catered for with a high-powered new headphone amp.
The Subsequent 25 has two oscillators which can be split in Duo Mode so they can play two different notes simultaneously. There’s additionally a sub-oscillator and noise source allowing you to make everything from thunderous basses to percussion and searing leads.
What sets Moog’s current set of designs apart from offerings from some other more affordable recreations, for the likes of Behringer for example, is the fact that there’s full MIDI implementation. This means you can automate all front panel controls and many hidden parameters via the accompanying plug-in or a MIDI controller/sequencer. There are also four onboard CV inputs for integrating with modular.
The Subsequent 25 will be made by hand in Moog’s factory in Asheville, NC and the new instrument will replace award-winning Sub Phatty.
