Prolific music producer Rick Rubin has announced his first book, The Creative Act: A Way of Being, which aims to provide readers with insight into his philosophy towards creativity and production.

The Def Jam co-founder will publish the book in early 2023, according to the Guardian. It’s said to be a non-fiction title that explores the creative process.

“I set out to write a book about what to do to make a great work of art,” Rubin said in a statement. “Instead, it revealed itself to be a book on how to be.”

Canongate, the UK publisher putting out the book, revealed further details on The Creative Act… saying that it explores “the principles of creativity for creators of all kinds, including people in their everyday lives” while also offering “revelatory insight into the mysterious process of making stuff great.”

Rubin’s production career has spanned generations and genres, with credits on albums with Johnny Cash and Nine Inch Nails, to Run DMC, The Strokes and Kanye West.

Most recently, the producer is set to work with the Red Hot Chili Peppers on their upcoming album, Unlimited Love.

An exact release date for The Creative Act: A Way of Being, has yet to be announced. One could expect the producer to include anecdotes from the music industry, as well as juicy nuggets of wisdom on music production in the book.
