Independent music distributor DistroKid has sold out its Sellouts NFT collection, in collaboration with 10,000 indie musicians. The entire collection sold out in just one day

Launched on 15 December on the Nifty Gateway marketplace, the collection features NFTs depicting DistroKid mascots. Each mascot, customised with over 300 unique traits such as hair, facial expression, eyewear, clothes and more, holds an album art of a participating artist.

Similar to the Bored Ape Yacht Club, Sellouts is based on the Ethereum blockchain and has a special URL that listeners can access to stream an artist’s music. The indie musicians all applied to be part of the series, and have been given the opportunity to write about their music, what makes it special to them, and offer any special perks to collectors.

Each piece was valued at $60 on the first drop with over 13,000 fans registering their interest. Buyers were assigned a random Sellout, which was then revealed when the drawing closed the next day, 16 December.

DistroKid CEO Philip Kaplan said of the collection: “Sellouts started as a fun way to dip our toe in the NFT waters alongside thousands of amazing artists and music creators. Artists were thrilled when it sold out so fast. Congrats to all!”

Duncan Cock Foster, co-founder at Nifty Gateway added: “This was an incredible project that celebrated 10,000 independent musicians. I’m thrilled when I think about how many people will discover their new favourite song from this project. It was an incredible use of the NFT medium that will go down in history as an incredibly innovative drop.”
