Massachusetts-based audio software developer iZotope introduces the newest version of its flagship audio repair and enhancement suite, RX 8. Also announced is RX Post Production Suite 5, with Music Production Suite 4 coming this autumn.

iZotope’s Engineering Emmy-winning RX software has been an essential tool for many musicians and producers since 2010. It’s been used on a multitude of albums, movies and TV shows to repair damaged and noisy audio recordings. iZotope RX 8 builds on these capabilities as a toolkit for audio restoration at any level, from content creators to post-production pros. Its new features include Spectral Recovery, Wow & Flutter, Loudness Control, Guitar De-noise, 32 Audio Tab Limit and Horizontal Scrolling.

Triple Threat

RX 8 comes in three different models: RX 8 Advanced, RX 8 Standard and RX 8 Elements. Advanced will provide you with the most comprehensive toolset, with the number of features descending in Standard and Elements.

RX 8 Advanced packs in the new Spectral Recovery, which restores frequencies above 4kHz, enhancing grainy audio from live-streamed and remote audio calls. Also exclusive to Advanced is Wow & Flutter, which corrects pitch fluctuations from tape and vinyl recordings. Wow can be used to fix pitch drifting, while Flutter will correct pitch variances that occur at a faster rate.

Guitar De-noise, featured in RX 8 Advanced and Standard, is a new powerful tool that can attenuate unwanted fret noise, amp hiss and loud pick sounds. This is ideal for sounds that become unintentionally emphasised through audio processing, having a negative effect on the recording as a whole. Loudness Control is also available for Advanced and Standard, letting you instantly load in preset loudness targets for broadcast requirements. You can also monitor your levels using the numeric and history plot readouts for integrated, short-term and momentary loudness.

Cleaned-up workflow

Across all versions of RX 8, new workflow enhancements have been introduced. Horizontal Scrolling lets users use a mouse or trackpad to scroll effortlessly through the x-axis of the Spectrogram Display for rapid editing. RX 8 doubles up on its previous 16 Audio Tab limit, now capable of viewing and editing 32 files simultaneously within RX Audio Editor. Features such as Music Rebalance, Batch Processor and De-Hum all see improvements, too.

“Since we first released our flagship RX product, additional years of research and innovation in machine learning have allowed us to continue to provide the industry with timely solutions to audio repair issues that were previously impossible,” said iZotope principal product manager Mike Rozett. “Our latest edition of RX continues this tradition with new features such as Spectral Recovery, Guitar De-noise and Wow & Flutter, all designed to help people solve the unsolvable in audio.”

RX 8 is available immediately, with all versions on an introductory price. RX 8 Elements is available at $99, RX 8 Standard at $299 and RX 8 Advanced at $999. RX Post Production Suite is also on an introductory price of $1499.
