Sonos has sent out save-the-dates for a mystery event taking place on May 25th with the words “Step into the magic with Sonos,” and the invitation to “join us as we Journey through Sonos…”, leading to much speculation about the launch of a new product.

Some have pointed out the capitalisation of the word ‘Journey’, speculating about whether or not this could relate to portable technology of some description, and by extension the company’s long-rumoured (but as of yet unconfirmed) wireless headphones.

Many expected a mention of headphones at Sonos’ 2021 event, but if there were plans for an announcement, they were seemingly scratched in favour of the Sonos Roam portable speaker.

In January of this year it was reported that Sonos had acquired T2 Software, a Louisville, Kentucky-based startup specialising in Bluetooth LE Audio. Bluetooth LE Audio is geared toward optimising both battery usage and wireless audio quality— the two major components of wireless headphones.

Sonos has also recently acquired Dutch audio brand Mayht, just four months after Mayht showcased its Heartmotion transducer technology at CES 2022, promising to facilitate speakers “ten times more compact, flatter and lightweight without any compromise to sound quality”. While this doesn’t necessary have a direct relationship with the possible unveiling of a new line of headphones, it does fuel speculation that more portable (or at least smaller scale) products may be on the way.

Another rumour has to do with the possibility of Sonos moving into TV, particularly since the company began a recruitment drive for engineers with relevant experience to work on a new project dubbed ‘Home Theatre OS’. Whatever the reality, fans can expect more to be revealed on May 25th.
