Beatport has uploaded recordings from its Beatport Originals² Academy, a day of workshops that took place at IMS Ibiza 2022 on 28 April.

The day, run in conjunction with Microsoft Surface, featured workshops and panel talks led by melodic techno songwriter, producer and vocalist JOPLYN, afro-house DJ AMÉMÉ, and DJs/producers Cici and Alex Kennon.

In her workshop, Berlin-based JOPLYN breaks down her live show setup. In the video, you can learn how she builds a track using an Akai APC Mini, Pioneer DJ DJM-900NXS2, Empress Reverb pedal and an Arturia Keystep running into Ableton Live.

JOPLYN explains how she uses the technical tools behind her vocal processing, including a vocoder, reverb, pitching, delay and more. She also talks about the order of her set, which instruments come in and when, and her personal experiences on stage.

AMÉMÉ’s workshop is all about music curation. It offers insight into how the West African-born DJ prepares playlists for gigs in various settings, whether that’s in different cities, at a festival or in a club, or at differing stages of a night.

The workshop centres around the Beatport DJ App and shows how it can be used to streamline setlist curation.

In Conversation with Cici and Alex Kennon is a talk that gives insight into how music gets released. They also give advice for aspiring music producers on how to approach record labels.

Additionally, a workshop with Inder Phull, CEO of deadmau5- and Richie Hawtin-backed PIEXELYNX, explores the potential of NFT and Web3 in the music industry. He even shows viewers how to create their own interactive NFTs. You can watch it here.

Also at IMS Ibiza this year, Beatport’s CEO Robb McDaniels delivered a keynote unveiling their plan to invest $100,000 into Road to Recover, an initiative that will help catalyse gender equality in the music industry. The idea was formed after McDaniels discovered that “95 per cent of customers in the DJ community were male”, according to the Beatport CEO.

Alongside talks and workshops, the IMS’ annual Business Report this year gave an update on the economical status of the electronic music industry. It revealed a growth in the industry’s worth to $6billion since 2021.
