LinnDrum LM-2

Beaotic is giving away LmFree, a library of LinnDrum LM-2 samples, as a Kontakt instrument and as a folder of WAV files. LmFree will give you all the drum sounds found in the original LM-2, with variations for each hit.

With the Kontakt instrument, Beaotic’s Round Robin technology will cycle through five different samples for each note you hit, for a more natural response. It also features Velocity To Start, which defines the start position of the sample based on the velocity of the triggered note. If the note is hit hard, it will start closer to the very beginning of the sample. Oscillator Drift will add subtle pitch randomisation to mimic the behaviour of analogue oscillators.

The original LinnDrum LM-2 could have each sound tuned to a different pitch. To recreate pitching, LmFree has multi-samples for each sound, ensuring that there are no digital artefacts when pitching. These can be modulated in real-time and automated, too. Note Edit lets you make adjustments for Pitch, Level, Pan and Output for each note.

All the samples in LmFree are recorded at 24-bit/96kHz. You’ll need the full version of Kontakt to use the instrument, but you can still load in the WAV samples into your DAW or sampler and customise them as you wish. To get the library, you just need to create an account with your email address.

The LinnDrum LM-2 was a stalwart drum machine of the 80s, with Prince, Peter Gabriel, Jean-Michel Jarre, Sting and more all laying down beats with it. The LM-2 featured swing, which you won’t get in LmFree, but it’s likely your DAW has a swing feature or a note editor that you can manually create a groove with.
