Music technology blog and sample creator Wavbvkery has made a new free sample pack for hip-hop heads. Old School boasts 106 one-shot samples inspired by the sounds of influential boom-bap beatmakers J Dilla, Alchemist, Pete Rock, 9th Wonder, Havoc and DJ Premier.

The Old School kit is split into four categories: Kicks, Hats, Percs and Snares. The sounds were created by cutting samples from old vinyl records and combining them with recordings of drum machines. The samples were then processed through analogue and digital hardware. To fit with the genre, hard hitting kicks were compiled along with snappy snares and dusty hi-hats.

“Although the idea behind Old School was to produce a drum kit specifically made for Boom Bap it can certainly also be used for styles like West Coast Old School or Lo-Fi Hip Hop”, Wavbvkery says.

Downloading the samples requires no e-mail sign-up or checkout, just hit the download button and they’re all yours. Once you’ve grabbed them, check out our tutorial on creating old school hip-hop beats to make the most of your new samples.
