Universal Audio’s new extension for Luna lets users get the character of the classic Ampex ATR-102 tape machine onto their productions.

The extension is based on the UAD Ampex ATR-102 plug-in, but has special integration with Luna; it launches directly onto the master fader or busses rather than in a separate plug-in window.

Endorsed by Ampex, the emulation promises the classic tape machine’s distinct analogue flavours, without the expense and hassle of real tape. Plus, when was the last time you spotted an ATR-102 at your local music store?

For authenticity, UA said that it followed closely to the original’s analogue circuitry, modelling its transformers and amplifiers. The tape path has been emulated too, and the extension offers multiple tape formulas, head stacks, calibration levels, and controls for bias, record EQ and playback EQ.

Hear some sound examples of it below.

“The ATR-102 expands on our deep Luna integration efforts with Studer and Oxide tape extensions,” said Will Shanks, senior product designer at UA. “Now users can get reduced latency tape sound on bus and master faders in Luna, with analogue‑style post‑fader signal flow and streamlined control over tape speed, formula, head stacks, and much more.”

Owners of the UAD Ampex ATR-102 plug-in can get their hands on the extension for free, while new users will find it priced at $349.
