Uncanny Valley’s Memu is an AI-driven engine that creates new music around the clock
The Australian music technology company was the winner of the first-ever AI-songwriting contest inspired by Eurovision.

Last year saw Uncanny Valley take home first prize at the first-ever AI-songwriting contest inspired by Eurovision. Now, the Australian music technology company has launched Memu, its AI-driven engine that’s creating fresh tunes around the clock.
Memu is self-described as a “collaborative music engine” that takes “small catchy bites of music and turns them into songs and suggestions”. The engine generates musical ideas that can be applied in DJ mixes, songwriting, livestreams and more.
Uncanny Valley touts the engine as customisable and, as it relies on the contributions of artists, is able to trace pieces to their source and pay its creators.
Speaking to the World Intellectual Property Organisation in an interview published in May 2021, Uncanny Valley’s co-founders Justin Shave and Charlton Hill expounded further on the tech behind the engine.
“Memu utilises machine learning and augmented intelligence to select and combine music intuitively to create and mix a unique real-time musical experience,” they said. “The Memu engine is very adaptable and can be used in diverse ways, from its collaboration mode with artists and IP holders to individual streams and the option to output large volumes of music.”
The pair also explained their motivations for developing the tech came from a “boom in demand” for customisable music content to “complement new storytelling methods”.
“These are the core elements of the Memu engine,” they said. “Another core motivation was to create a collaborative platform for IP holders to help them maximise and repurpose their IP. Memu enables that.”
