Audioscape Engineering has launched the V-Comp, a vocal compressor inspired by the famed Gates Sta-Level.

Although largely similar in specs to the original, the V-Comp has a slight twist: faster recovery times. Turning the recovery time knob towards the ‘faster’ region gets you breathy, pumping vocals. Taking this same control down to ‘slow’, however, affords you 30 to 40dB worth of compression that sits right in your mix without you even hearing it, according to the brand.

The device makes use of seven tubes, one of which is the JJ 6386 preamp tube which is notable for its use in the revered Fairchild 660 and 670 compressors.
