Rusty Piano is a fully multi-sampled acoustic piano, intentionally recorded hot with a touch of saturation to provide a heavier, rugged sound. SampleScience says this is ideal for genres such as indie rock, lo-fi hip-hop, jazz improv, rock ‘n’ roll and more.
Listen to it in action below.
The plug-in features one sample per note, a multi-LFO with depth and rate control, a high-pass/low-pass filter, room reverb, amplitude envelope controls and three voice modes – polyphonic, monophonic and legato.
Rusty Piano’s GUI and workflow is essentially the same as most of SampleScience’s virtual instruments. The brand has been prolific in its output of free and affordable plug-ins, most of which sport the same effects and features as Rusty Piano – great news for anyone that’s already acquainted with SampleScience’s catalogue.
SampleScience’s plug-ins often take up minimal disk space, with Rusty Piano only requiring 144MB. It runs as an AU or VST in 64-bit DAWs for Windows and macOS. This includes FL Studio, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Reaper, Studio One, Reason, Cubase and Bitwig.
This isn’t the first SampleScience instrument that’s geared towards lo-fi sounds. The free Room Piano v3 is another multi-sampled piano plug-in that was created with hip-hop and lo-fi genres in mind. Cassette Roads is “the perfect plug-in to create lo-fi beats to study to”, SampleScience says, giving you luscious electric piano sounds for dreamy tracks.
Rusty Piano can be downloaded for free at SampleScience’s website. You can also opt to name-your-price for the plug-in, should you wish to support SampleScience’s future projects. To download the plug-in, you just need to enter your email address to receive the file.
