It’s one small step for man, one giant beep for mankind.

Giorgio Sancristoforo has been known to create some pretty out-there plug-ins, including Decoder/Encoder, which lets you hide audio files in your songs and Substantia, a feature-filled physical-modelling synthesis programme.

Now, the developer has teased his latest creation, Quadrivium, a soft synth that revolves (pun intended) around natural satellites in space.

The main draw of the synth is that it uses hourly data from the 12 moons of four gas giants (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune) as its modulation source. However, whether this data is taken in real-time, or draws from projected data isn’t clear just yet. Sancristoforo says that the data will span 10 years, from 1 January 2020 to 1 January 2030

A matrix tab lets you patch each moon to different parameters, which are spread across the soft synth’s four VCOs, eight-channel mixer, filters, ring modulator, reverb and tape echo. Additionally, Sancristoforo teased the ability to sync this information to MIDI.

If you’re wondering whether this will be any more useful than having non-celestial LFOs, this probably isn’t for you. However, if the idea of controlling a synth with actual moons appeals, then you can check out the teaser video below:

12 moons orbiting around the four giant gas planets as modulation sources? yes!Orbital data from Jan 1 2020 to Jan 1 2030 (hour by hour) for the new Quadrivium synthesizer! Modulate oscillators, filters, delay and create incredible spacey soundscapes!Did I mention that you can also use the moons orbits to modulate your MIDI gear? :DSoon available at https://www.giorgiosancristoforo.netShare if you love!
