Nembrini Audio is giving away the Clon Minotaur plug-in, a digital recreation of the Klon Centaur – a coveted drive pedal for guitars that can fetch prices of over $3,000 on the used market.

Fortunately, you won’t have to scour auction pages to get your hands on the Clon Minotaur, just sign up for an account on Nembrini’s website and you’re good to go.

The recreation offers the same simple controls as the original. There are knobs for gain, treble and output, as well as a bypass control to engage the effect.

Nembrini describes the overdrive characteristics of the Clon Minotaur as transparent – in that it “adds gain to the signal without significantly altering the tone of the guitar.”

The plug-in also digitally models two germanium diodes to serve the basis of the clipping stage. The gain control essentially functions as a mix control between clean and clipped signals, and then passes through volume and tone parameters.

The original Klon Centaur’s development cycle happened between 1990 and 1994. About 8,000 units were produced over the following 15 years. Crafty pedal-makers who tried to open up the devices to copy their circuits found the internals to be gooped – or covered in black epoxy resin with the intention of warding off imitators.

Nembrini Audio’s Clon Minotaur plug-in comes in VST2, VST3, AAX and AU formats.
