Image-Line’s upcoming version of FL Studio will include a new synth plug-in called Flex.

While it is a free addition for current FL Studio users, Flex seems to have quite a bit of muscle. It’s a preset-based synth that offers subtractive, wavetable, multisample, FM and AM based synthesis. It’s also got an intuitive UI and macro controls that are designed to help you focus on making music.

One of its main highlights is the Flex Preset Browser. This gives you access to an ever-expanding online library, and fuss-free methods of navigating and recalling your downloaded presets.

Right next to this is the Analysis tile, which provides you with graphical insights into the patch you’re making. You can select between a number of GUI themes, ranging from waveforms to frequency histograms. One that ought to be of particular interest is the Spectrogram, seen below (third from left).

According to Image-Line, colour hue represents intensity or level, vertical position is relative to frequency (20 Hz to 20,000 Hz) and horizontal position shows time.

Otherwise, you’ll find controls that are familiar on a soft synth: pitch, filter, envelopes, plus delay and reverb effects, and a limiter.

Flex is available as part of the FL Studio 20.1.2 public beta now, via the Image-Line forums.
