Embodme, a new music tech startup from France, has announced the Erae Touch, a MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) controller geared for live performance that can be played in a variety of ways.

The Erae Touch boasts a large 18-inch surface, which is covered in an array of force sensors and multi-colour LEDs. Thanks to its soft-silicone display, the device can be played – by touching, swiping, or even hitting with a drumstick – with a range of expression spanning vibratos, portamentos or pizzicatos. It offers 10 simultaneous points of contact and a host of customisation options via its companion app, Erae Lab.

Through Erae Lab, music-makers can customize their device using simple drag-and-drop elements. The software represents the control surface on-screen, making it easy to designate control zones such as faders, XY pads, drum pads, multi-track step sequencers and much more.

Plus, it looks absolutely awesome.

Embodme promises that the Erae Touch will offer low-latency and a high-degree of sensitivity; the device was built with MIDI 2.0 in mind, which the brand says “goes deeper in velocity dynamics, is more accurate in microtonal variations, and allows you to read informations from your DAWs and synths for easier mappings and routings.”

Each Erae Touch will come with a free copy of Continua, a polysynth plug-in from Audio Damage, along with special presets that showcase the device’s expressive capabilities.

The Kickstarter campaign for the Erae Touch is set to launch tomorrow (14 October). Embodme has already revealed the device’s price tag; early adopters will be able to get their hands on the device for as low as $590 (usually $790). Estimated delivery is set for February 2021.
