BandLab, the free social music-making platform for mobile and web, has officially crossed 30 million users.

Users now create 10 million new tracks per month, according to a press release from BandLab, adding that the platform experienced a 150 per cent growth in users from 2019 to 2021.

“We’ve seen activity grow naturally,” said BandLab CEO Meng Ru Kuok. “Last year, it exploded and it hasn’t slowed down. Even as circumstances changed in places around the world, creativity has remained a part of people’s lives.”

BandLab offers tools for music-makers to record, produce, edit, and share their tracks online. Last November, the platform also announced BandLab Sounds, a free service that gives away a massive library of royalty-free samples and loops – usable in any DAW.

Outside of production tools, the brand dipped its toes into the self-distribution game, announcing BandLab Albums in June 2020. The service lets artists publish an unlimited number of singles, EPs and albums and keep ownership of their work with no hidden terms and conditions.

Kuok also explained that – despite the big numbers being a good look for BandLab – he’s much more excited about how active the platform’s community is.

“What’s really exciting is the active usage of the product. Musicmaking means you need to be active, not just passively scrolling a feed,” Kuok said. “The scale of the usage around the world shows the democratisation of music creation.”

“YouTube made everyone understand they needed to be a video creator,” Kuok added. “As audio continues to evolve and grow in importance, everyone needs to become a music creator.”
