Andrew Huang’s Flip is a mobile sampling app that goes deep

It lets you write, perform and even mix and master your tracks in-app

Music-maker and YouTuber Andrew Huang has launched Flip, a mobile app that promises a streamlined approach to creating and performing sample-based music.

Streamlining the use of found sounds is a big part of Flip’s appeal; once you’ve recorded a sound, you can easily play it with drum pads or a keyboard in-app. What’s more, you can fine-tune each sample with a set of editing tools and apply built-in effects such as delay, filter chorus and a bit crusher.

“A lot of my work involves unorthodox sound sources, from household items to aircraft hangers. Often I find these spontaneously, and would like to work with them in that moment of inspiration,” Huang said. “I started daydreaming of the ideal workflow for that process.”

Flip also lets you put together and finish a tune from within the app itself. You can arrange your samples into 16 different patterns, which can be dragged and dropped to form a song in arrangement view.

Bringing things over to post, there are 19 automatable parameters per track; a rudimentary mixer for setting your levels, pan and reverb sends; a mastering section with an equaliser, maximiser and limiter, and an export section that lets you render out your completed song.

In the performance page, you get to trigger patterns live while also controlling a global filter, assignable pitch bends and a random fill generator.

Flip also features downloadable artist packs with sounds and projects from the likes of Bad Snacks, Rachel K Collier, Cuckoo, Chuck Sutton, Pusher and of course, Huang himself.

Flip is available now for iPads and iPhones for $9.99 on the Apple App Store.
