With a promise of a “faster, more precise and free” update to FL Studio, Image-Line has brought the beloved DAW into version 20.8. Some key new features include Frequency Splitter, Instrument Tuner, plus updates to Parametric EQ, Maximus, FLEX, Transistor bass and further workflow enhancements. FL Studio 20.8 comes free to owners of the DAW as part of Image-Line’s Lifetime Free Updates.

Frequency Splitter is a new effect that lets you split and process your audio into two or three bands. You can use Linear Phase or Low Latency filters with a slope of up to -96dB per octave. This means that you can apply different effects to different frequency bands of your signal. For example, you might sidechain your low-end whilst routing the high-end to a delay. A Frequency Histogram, Heatmap and dual display can be used to visualise the frequencies of your audio.

The new Instrument Tuner effect is rather straight forward: a visual indicator will tell you if an instrument is in tune or not.

Fruity Parametric EQ 2 features the Frequency Histogram found in Frequency Splitter to offer a more surgical approach to EQing, while Linear Phase filter mode for artefact free high slew-rate modulation. These features are now found in Maximus, too. Parametric EQ 2 also has Band Mute switches, Solo bands, improved FIR, Mid/Side/L/R visualisation and an updated UI, among other improvements.

FL Studio’s FLEX instrument features a new browser and arpeggiator switch, while Transistor Bass has a V2 TB-303 cutoff range for a more convincing acid bass sound. ZGE Visualizer sports a drag-and-drop approach to applying content to the Main Editor, with video now preloaded to memory for smoother performance.

More performance tweaks such as Merge Automation Clips and glitch-free plug-in loading are part of FL Studio 20.8. A full list of the new features and updates can be found on the Image-Line website.

FL Studio 20.8 is available now as a free update to existing owners. A free trial is available for those thinking of trying out the renowned DAW. The FL Studio All Plugins Edition is also available at $399, down from $899.
