Production music, also known as library music, represents a critical income stream for producers and composers. And among the most trusted libraries is Epidemic Sound, used by the likes of Complex, GoPro, Twitter and countless YouTubers, and has just announced a new tech partnership to help creators find music faster.

To achieve this, Epidemic Sound is turning to Singapore-based AI music analysis start-up Musiio to supercharge their search mechanism. Epidemic’s tracks are already tagged with mood, genre, tempo and duration, but Musiio’s AI can automatically add between 12 and 19 new descriptive tags. These new tags include vocals (presence, male/female), energy, key, recording quality, emotion, instrumentation and more.

For Epidemic’s library of over 30,000 tracks, if tagged manually, this task would be extraordinarily tedious for human listeners and take a vast amount of time. In comparison, Musiio’s powerful AI can tag at a rate of one million tracks per day, which means Epidemic’s whole catalogue could be tagged in under an hour.

Epidemic Sound CTO Per-Anders Legeryd says, “Having the right kind of music can make or break your content, which is why searching for music can often be one of the most time consuming and frustrating parts of making a video.”

But why is having more tags important? Musiio CEO Hazel Savage explains, “Not everyone searching for music has the same musical vocabulary and therefore the more descriptors you can supply, the better the search experience can be.”

That translates to content creators finding the music they’re looking for faster.

And the upside for composers and producers who contribute to Epidemic Sound is that their music stands a better chance of being surfaced for use on videos.

You can test the tagging technology on your tracks here, right now.

While Musiio’s Tagging API is being used by Epidemic, the AI company also offers a separate Search API where any track in a database can become a ‘seed track’ to find others like it. And with customers spanning Commercial Music, Production Music, Sound FX and more, they’re constantly working on new tools.

“We are currently working on a new classifier to add even more granularity to the Stem, FX and samples tagging, so watch this space,” says Savage.

The newly augmented tagging feature will be available from Autumn 2020. To explore the Epidemic catalogue, visit epidemicsound.com.
