AudioThing Crusher

AudioThing’s Things series of plug-ins offers a straightforward range of easy-to-use effects for your DAW. With a workflow reminiscent of effects pedals, the series promises big impacts on your session while not exhausting your CPU.The latest plug-in in the series, the Things Crusher, is a multimode filter and bit-crusher combo based on the effects section of the popular Noises, which AudioThing created in collaboration with the synthesist Hainbach.

An experimental instrument combining raw source audio captured by the Berlin-based Hainbach, Noises provides an array of sound sculpting tools to create what AudioThing describes as “a vast world of noise into your music and audio production.”

The Things Crusher, in turn, combines filtering with signal crushing to enable quick and characterful processing of any source audio, not just that of Noises. It offer a multimode filter (lowpass, highpass, bandpass or notch) with 2 or 4-pole settings and adjustable output gain, along with a crisp-sounding bit crusher with bits, downsample and mix paramteres. Things Crusher also borrows the Harshness parameter from AudioThing’s lo-fi tape plug-in Reels for more musical tuning of the effect— something that could just give it the edge over the multitude of bit crushers out there.

See the plug-in in action below.

Things Crusher is currently free with any purchase from AudioThing throughout May, or available to purchase for an introductory price of €9 (usual price €19). It is compatible with macOS 10.9 or higher and Windows 7 or higher, available in AU, VST2, VST3 and AAX formats. Head to audiothing.net to find out more.
