NAMM 2020: Drawmer has launched the 1970 Dual FET Compressor And Pre-amplifier, which builds on the UK brand’s 1960 unit.

Billed as “one of the most adaptable” devices of its type around, the 1970 is designed to sound vintage at an affordable price. It expands on its predecessor’s feature set, tweaks the control panel layout, and tweaks the EQ to be more accurate, Drawmer claims.

The 1970’s two mic preamps use THAT Corporation technology – which is billed to be ultra-clean – and provide up to 66dB of gain. The preamps have switchable mic impedance for accurate matching, whether you’re recording vocals or amplified guitars. There are separate XLR DI inputs, too.

On the compression side of the device, the 1970 can be used as two mono-tracking compressors or a single stereo buss compressor. It has two modes – Big and Air – for lows and trebles, respectively, alongside the typical suite of compressor controls such as threshold and ratio.

By tweaking the wet/dry mix and output gain knobs on both channels, you’ll be able to effect a “parallel compression” function without any need for external mixing devices. This mixes the wet and dry signal together, providing an easy way to control the amount of compression.

The Drawmer 1970 is housed in a rugged steel chassis and aluminium front panel, and is hand-built in the UK.
