discoDSP’s free OB-X emulator, OB-Xd, updates to version 2.0
A new vintage-style GUI, MIDI CC and faster controls make this freebie a must-have.

A favoured freeware OB-X soft synth, discoDSP’s OB-Xd, gets upgraded to version 2.0 and brings several desirable features.
There have been several new Oberheim synth emulations cropping up in the last few months, with Arturia’s OB-XA V, Synapse Audio Obsession and, of course, Behringer’s teaser of its UB-Xa. For those of you looking for a free solution to your OB lust, OB-Xd seems to be a no-brainer.
As well as attempting to recreate the OB-X’s sound and character, OB-Xd offers some new features, including a blendable multimode filter. If you’d like to learn how to get fat, 80s flavours for free with OB-Xd, check out our workshop here.
This iteration of the soft synth brings a GUI that is seven times faster than the original, complete with a new Ilkka Rosma Dark Theme, which embraces the wood panel aesthetic. OB-Xd also introduced MIDI CC learn and MIDI CC support. The JUCE framework has been updated to 5.4.7 for enhanced stability and compatibility, too.
OB-Xd version 2.0 sees support for Linux and macOS Catalina, as well as being available as a standalone app. discoDSP is offering OB-Xd 2.0 as a free download, but a $49 donation can be made via the site to support future development.
