Dirac Live for Studio can help your studio sound its best

Swedish audio developer Dirac has created a plug-in for your DAW that is designed to test the sound of your studio and reduce frequency problems for a more accurate mixdown. Dirac Live for Studio builds on a project that began almost 10 years ago and was trusted by hi-fi pro companies such as Arcam, Datasat, JBL Synthesis, NAD and StormAudio.
Sound is quite a complex phenomenon; as sound waves disperse from your speaker system, they will bounce across walls, windows, furniture – pretty much every surface in the room, as they get to your ears. This means certain frequencies will be amplified whilst some are weakened, which will change how your audio is perceived, and not always for the better. So, if speaker placement and correct acoustics are paramount in achieving supreme quality in your audio then you’d like to get it right first time. Unfortunately, this is usually quite an expensive procedure.
Enter Dirac Live for Studio, which is designed to be an affordable alternative. Using patented impulse response and frequency response correction, Dirac Live for Studio works as a plug-in for your DAW, improving the accuracy of sound reproduction in your studio. This ensures that producers are faithfully experiencing the complete recording, unaffected by their room, allowing for a more concise mix and master. The room is tested by Dirac Live producing a full frequency sweep, and analysing the response it receives back, tackling both the frequency and time domain problems to reduce the room’s impact on your audio.
For this to be effective, you’ll need a mic that Dirac recommends. This includes its miniDSP UMIK-1 microphone or a microphone kit by XTZ Sound in Balance AB. Dirac says “if that is not possible, Dirac recommends that you use a calibration file. The Dirac Live Calibration Tool supports microphone calibration files as long as they represent the frequency response of the microphone. Microphones without a flat frequency response will produce incorrect measurement information, and you will have to take this into consideration when setting your target curve”
