Get paid to perform online with Dialog Audio’s That’s Live
No fixed fees and no setup charges are required
German audio software developer Dialog Audio has announced That’s Live, a streaming service for artists, DJs and orchestras looking to perform to a global online audience. The service provides the technical infrastructure for hosting paid live stream events without asking for fixed costs or setup charges, taking a small portion of ticket sales revenue instead.
A plethora of online live performance solutions have arisen in the wake of COVID-19 after it was quickly realised that major social media platforms aren’t always suitable. Mixcloud recently announced its Tickets platform for ticketed live stream events, though is currently invite-only. With That’s Live, Dialog Audio aims to bring an accessible, straightforward service to all types of performers, regardless of genre or following. All you’ll need is a stable internet connection, a computer with Dialog Audio’s Live Processor software, and an audio source.
You’ll need to register an account with Dialog Audio and with their partner service Stripe to get started – this is free. You can then create and schedule a live event and sell tickets via an automatically-generated webpage, which can be easily shared with fans and followers. Once an attendee purchases a ticket, it will be sent as an email, giving them access to the event when it starts. This is where Dialog Audio takes its cut. As Dialog Audio and Stripe are handling transactions, customer support and technical infrastructure, they take an average cut of 15 per cent from ticket sales, which seems pretty fair.
But what about streaming quality? Dialog Audio says it uses a reliable content delivery network, with an audio stream that can transmit compressed audio at 128, 192, or 320kpbs. This depends on which setting and format the viewer chooses. HLS and MPEG-DASH formats are available for the user, which are compatible with most media playing devices.
Dialog Audio’s That’s Live seems like it could be a viable and profitable solution for performers looking to live stream their act. Although we may be nearing the return of real-life live events, we could continue to see an uptick in these types of services as we embrace a post-COVID world. Whether they catch on, however, is a different matter.
