Bandcamp opens its vinyl pressing service to independent artists and labels
10,000 slots are available in the platform’s crowdfunded vinyl manufacturing service
In another bid to aid the industry during tumultuous times, Bandcamp has announced the rollout of its vinyl pressing service to the wider community. Based on a crowdfunded model, 10,000 artists and labels can campaign for a vinyl release with a turnaround time of three to four months with no upfront cost and no risks.
Bandcamp’s vinyl manufacturing program was on a trial run during 2019, where invited artists and labels that sold enough preorders would have their music pressed and distributed. Now, more sellers can take advantage of the service by creating a campaign that produces a minimum run of 250 records, plus covers the expenses of vinyl mastering and package design.
To fill one of the 10,000 slots, Bandcamp has outlined a six-step process for you to follow. First, choose a release you want on vinyl. Then, select your tracklist and design the record with vinyl colour and jacket design. Finalise your campaign goal, demonstrating how to fulfil the minimum run of 250, then set your pledge levels for buyers. Launch your campaign, which runs for 30 days, and upon its success, submit your masters and printer-ready art. Bandcamp has provided a wealth of tips and resources to give you a hand in the process.
Bandcamp says that it will press as many records as you sell, and can also press extra records to sell at merch tables, record stores and other points of sale. A volume discount is applied at 500 and 1,000 units, too.
A nice touch is Bandcamp’s commitment to 100 per cent carbon-neutral operations, working with Atmosfair to develop renewable energy projects.
The service comes after almost a year of regular Bandcamp Fridays, in which the company would waive its revenue share for 24 hours, giving 100 per cent of earnings directly to the label and artist. Bandcamp Live is also a new service that lets artist host ticketed live streams and set their own price for admission.
