Bandcamp is contributing 100% of its Juneteenth proceeds to the NAACP

Online music platform, Bandcamp, will be donating 100% of its share of sales to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund on 19 June 2020. This is in support of Juneteenth, an American holiday commemorating the freedom of enslaved persons in Texas on 19 June 1865. Bandcamp has said it will continue to operate in this fashion on every 19 June moving forward.
The brand has been on a roll with since the start of the pandemic. Its first two days of waving its revenue share on customer’s purchases have proven to be incredibly successful, breaking sales records and amassing $11.4m in direct-to-artist sales. Another waived-revenue Friday took place on 5 June. This Juneteenth hopes to continue the trend and encourage music fans to help raise money for a good cause.
Not only is Bandcamp doing its part for Juneteenth, but a pleasing amount of record labels and artists are preparing special releases for the holiday. Some names include SUNN O))), Rough Trade Records, Future Classic and Ghostly International, among plenty others.
Bandcamp is continuing to prove itself in the music community as a trusted and respected platform. That said, the difference it is making with these revenue-free days is marginal when considering the tens of billions of dollars the music industry pulls in on an annual basis. Industry commentary blog First Floor said in a post: “It is, however, a sign that an appetite exists for platforms that truly value the interests of artists and labels, particularly those who operate outside of the mainstream”.
