Audio-Technica recently surpassed one million sales of its AT2020 microphone, and is celebrating by giving away a 24-carat gold-plated edition. The company, founded in Japan in 1962, is also donating one million yen to non-profit organisation Hungry for Music.
The AT2020 is Audio-Technica’s affordable condenser microphone, boasting a price tag below £100 and providing high-quality recording. The brand says that the microphone “ushered in a golden age for the home studio” for musicians, streamers, podcasters and more. It’s fitting, then, that a gold-plated version arrives two decades later for each global sales area.
Audio-Technica says: “We never could have reached the one million mark without the support of creators everywhere who have discovered the AT2020, fallen in love with its sound, and continued to rely on the microphone as a vital creative tool. It is you – the creators – who have ensured this mic’s legacy.”
Hungry for Music, the organisation that Audio-Technica is donating one million yen to, is dedicated to expanding opportunities in music for children. It has provided thousands of musical instruments to children in 32 countries.
“For nearly 20 years, the AT2020 has been a springboard for creators everywhere,” says Audio-Technica US president and CEO Manabu Aoki. “With our donation to Hungry for Music, we hope to provide a similar boost to the creative expression of disadvantaged youth. By eliminating the economic barriers to learning an instrument, Hungry for Music makes it possible for more children to share in the joy of music-making, and we’re proud to support the organisation in those efforts.”
