API is celebrating its 50th anniversary with limited edition runs of its 2500 compressor and 862 channel strip. They may not come cheap, but they’ll certainly be a prized possession for those lucky enough to get their hands on one, as only fifty will be made of each device. Alongside the cosmetic redesigns of the units, API have made some functional additions to each unit, which may make them a must-have for API fans.

The 2500, with its lush new gold plate and bigger knobs, features a blend circuit. This can be used to attenuate the wetness of the compressor, going from a completely dry signal to fully wet with the twist of a knob. Parallel compression is made easy with the switch of a button, which may save some time for creating some classic New York sounding drums. API have made the Gain Reduction LEDs to remain lit up whilst the device is on – another cosmetic touch.

API’s 862 channel strip also gets a new gold finish, and combines the API 312 mic preamp and 550A EQ.. The company have strived to recreate the 312 cards as accurately as possible, as they were back in the 1970s. The 312 signal preamp signal feeds into the 550 EQ, but an insert is included in case you want to break the chain with some external effects.

As aforementioned, only fifty of each of these units will be made in this limited edition run. The 2500 compressor will cost $4500, and the 862 will cost $3600.
