AKG Lyra

Featuring circuitry based on 70 years of its acoustic engineering, AKG has announced the Lyra, an Ultra-HD, multimode USB mic. Lyra offers 24-bit/192kHz audio resolution, designed for content creators with a plug-and-play simplicity. The mic’s design is inspired by classic studio microphones, like the AKG C414, that “combines fast and easy control with timeless aesthetics”, according to AKG.

Lyra sports the AKG Adaptive Capsule Array, providing user-selectable capture modes that can be utilised for multiple performance scenarios. The plug-and-play operation means that users won’t need to be experienced in audio engineering to get set up and recording their content. AKG Lyra has an internal, self-adjusting shock mount, designed to minimise contact noise, and its built-in sound diffuser will reduce noise, eliminates pops and improves signal levels, all with the help of AKG’s proprietary Internal Element Overload Prevention.

AKG Lyra is capable of four capture modes using the Adaptive Capsule Array. Front mode works in the same way as a cardioid response pattern, isolating the target sound and reducing sound from the back and sides, designed for spoken word, vocals, or close mic-ed instrument recording. Front & Back mode captures and blends sound equally on both sides, as the name suggests, essentially implementing a figure-of-eight polar pattern. Tight Stereo mode captures audio in stereo with discrete left and right audio, designed for side-by-side interviews or panel discussions, or recording instruments like drums or piano. Wide Stereo mode captures audio with greater stereo separation, room ambience and depth. Like an omnidirectional mic, this mode will be most useful for capturing sounds from all around the mic for field recordings, documentaries or whole band sessions.

An integrated desktop stand with built-in cable management makes it easy to place Lyra on a desktop, and can also be mounted to a traditional mic stand or boom arm for more flexibility. Lyra comes with Ableton Live 10 Lite, and can work “seamlessly with all major audio and video production software and online platforms”, AKG says.
